Racing Ahead

The new year has defiantly started out with a bang! I've started a part time Maya course at the school I teach at, Van Arts. At first I thought that modeling in 3d would be necessary chore too learn if I was going to make my own 3d stuff. But it is supper fun!

On top of that, I'm teaching my self Toon Booms Animate Pro! Which is going to be rad as well. So you won't be getting anything completely finished for a while.

I don't know what to call the process for how I came up with this guy. I start with shape in mind and start laying down light pencil and see where it take me. At one point early on it was some kind of Mec. Until I put exhaust pipes on, now it is a Racing Chicken!

Platypus

Finally 2010! Things were crazy for the last month so I didn't have time to finish anyting so check out something unfinished.

Often the only time I get to draw purely for fun is with my kids. It is fun to grab one of their giant markers and not worry about any of the "rules" and just go to town.

Usually when I draw like a this I just go at it with the darkest marker I can find. This time I had a short I'm working on in mind so rough these out a bit with yellow first. I'm currently thumbnailing the story so It'll be a while yet.

The one in the middle at the bottom is probably closest too the direction I am going. Not only dose the dude on the right look like duck, he looks like the ones from Kung Fu Panda. (Well a deformed, driven over cousin.) So he gets the moustache.

Animate Pro!

Here is the first thing I've created using Animate Pro. He is the first pass of a design for a little bit of some animation I'd like too do. You get a screen shot because I could not get a decent picture from the learning edition.

I roughed him out on paper, and cleaned him and coloured him in the program. So far I really like Animate pro. After doing some of the tutorials and watching some more advanced examples online I'm pretty excited to learn more.

Just having the colours linked to the swatch was great. Saving gradients! Not having to deal with sync like in flash! And don't forget about Z-depth!

I should have lots of fun animating in it, once I figure out a few more things.

Barber Shop Sketch

My wife had to pick up some fabric for our youngest's stocking. (She has hand quilted one for each of our 3 boys) So I while she was in the store I was in the car and took the opportunity to sketch this Barber Shop. It is actually the one I remember my Dad taking me to when I was a kid.

I spent under five minutes on it. I wish I had a little more time with it. Enjoy!

Happy Holidays!

My eldest son thought that Elves were called Christmas Goblins, so here is my take. I drew this Christmass Goblin in SketchBook Pro and coloured him in Photoshop. The background picture I found on the net and tweaked it in Photoshop to match.

First finished piece of art for a project I am slowly working on.
More of a concept than anything else. Fun too do.

Old Man

We were walking home from picking up my eldest son, and had my youngest tucked away in his buggy. It was raining and had the cover pulled over so he was leaning forward poking his head out and this popped into my head. So enjoy.

Picking Teeth

This was one of the first scenes I tried using Maya. Keeping the finger stuck in the teeth became a problem. I learnt quite a lot, and I think it is kinda funny even if it isn't finished.

Turtle

I am having trouble uploading my 3d stuff right now. So here is a turtle
